Guest columnist Kevin Alexander stops by for a deep dive on a quartet of records that chronicle the literal death of one band and the birth of a new musical outfit that changed the sound of pop music.
I was a massive Joy Division fan. With Ian gone, New Order could never be that band, but it could be something different and wonderful. And they were. I saw them live in NYC in late August 1987 with Echo & The Bunnymen. PC&Ls and Low-Life remain my two favorite albums by New Order. Thanks for sharing, Kevin.
Hello Kevin, my wife thinks planes are falling out of the sky because of Trump, and that there have been an unusual number of plane crashes and planes catching on fire at airports, some of which aren’t being reported on the news. As my only “airportman” (REM reference!), is there any truth to this? She’s afraid to fly to Cabo with me next week.
It is an usual number, and that should (paradoxically) give some comfort. This has been big news simply because it doesn't happen very often. The last commercial crash was in '09. There are accidents and incidents everyday, but the truth is, you're much more likely to be hurt on the way to LAX than on the flight to Cabo. It's an incredibly robust system with tons of safety layers built in that have nothing to do with whomever is currently in the WH.
Let me put it another way: I'd have zero concern putting my sons on the flights next to you.
Fabulous writing and a good as it gets introduction to their work. Ceremony is all time favourite song and stands as a pathos bridge between the two bands. Recently saw Peter Hook and the Light play it. Sublime!
Any New Order ink is good ink. Thanks!
Hard to argue, Christopher. Thanks for being here.
Thank you, Chris! I'm glad you liked it!
I've always loved "The Perfect Kiss". That instrumental break is 👌 👍
Arguably my all time fave song!
Great read guys !
Thanks very much. Kevin did most of the work.
Thank you!
Gonna have to do some burrowing, but I could swear you wrote up Confusion or State of The Nation not too long ago?
Thanks, Matty. And great piece, Kevin!
Thank you, Jim! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for being here, Jim. Super glad ya dug this.

Those two albums are prolly my faves as well, Dusty. Great to have you here. Cheers.
Thank you Dusty! I think you nailed it here, and I'm glad they quickly figured out that "something different" was the path they need to take,

Thank you, Jim! I've been trying to see them play for awhile now. They announced another run of dates, so maybe 2025's the year?
