Found the band with Romantica, which is outside of your purview here, but I absolutely love it. I agree with your assessment the Penthouse is their pinnacle. Great band.

Great stuff, Matt. Luna is very important to me and my wife. We first met in person (from Twitter) as friends at an Atlanta show in Oct. 2015. We were married less than a year later. We saw them again in Atlanta two years later. The last time we saw them was Oct 2019. We flew to NYC to see a Penthouse show at the Bowery Ballroom and Justin was a guest on bass for that show. Thanks for writing this up!

Wow, what a great connection to Luna. I love it. The closest connection I have is that my girlfriend (now wife) and I saw Luna on the Penthouse tour with Mercury Rev opening. The bass player for Mercury Rev hit on my wife while I was standing right there. Not sure that's as good a story as yours, though. ;)

I highly recommend Dean's book "Black Postcards" if you haven't already read it. He's an excellent, entertaining writer. I read it after meeting him at a party and liking him. I also detected traces of an accent. Turns out he was born in New Zealand and lived there until he was 12, I think (before moving to New York). It is not a coincidence he ended up recruiting the bassist from The Chills. Speaking of which, the Chills, "Brave Words" finally got the remaster-with-bonus-tracks treatment. It will be available for streaming next month.
