Thank you for this scroll through movie memory lane. My brain really fired up remembering most of these wonderful films, and now I have a list of 13 to see. Cue the popcorn!
Clerks, The Big Lebowski, and Dr. Strangelove were all formative movies for me. I’d always get a lot of strange looks when quoting Dr. Strangelove amongst my millennial compatriots, but I’ve always said I belong in the 60s.
My father was 24 when Strangelove came out, and I lived and breathed that movie as a kid. Didn't matter what time of the day or night, my Cold War-obsessed (not in a terrible way) dad would find me and have me sit and watch it with him.
One of my electives was a film class, and we watched it as well. I’m going off really vague memory, but I think it was up next after ‘Cabaret,’ which is quite a seque.
Film and music are pretty tied for my love and passion. I always wanted to work in a record store, but ended up working in and managing a video store just after high school and loved it!! Thus Clerks (which came out during that time) is high on my list! Also, whenever I closed (and sometimes during working hours even though I wasn’t supposed to), I would throw in Stop Making Sense (or U2s Rattle and Hum concert video).
Solid list here!! Some of my top favorites are on this list! Singles, Big Lebowski, High Fidelity, Do the Right Thing! Love it!
I would happily do that. What's the best way to proceed? I had started thinking about it yesterday, and I have a list of 15 right now that just needs a little editing.
Gotta love this list! A nice mix. Airplane! remains one of my favorite films of all time. Full stop. "Surely, you must love 'The Godfather'" - Indeed I do, and don't call me Shirley.
I was never much for Clerks... appreciated it, but I felt it was a tad overrated (kinda how I think about most of Kevin Smith's movies, but he has a vision, which is to be applauded).
This sounds snooty, so apologies in advance, but those big mainstream, popcorn Spielberg movies (excluding. Jaws) never did it for me. They're fine, (shrugs).
The Big Lebowski never stops being amazing.
And a nod to To Live and Die In LA?!!! That film exposed us to Willem Dafoe and Michael Mann outside Miami Vice. That film is fantastic... and the title track by Wang Chung?!!
“Nothing captures the zeitgeist of early 90s GenXers in the Pacific Northwest better. We all either knew a Cliff Poncier, wanted to be in our own band, or were writing about them. 10/10. No notes. “
I completely agree with you. We’re the same age and this movie is a time capsule just as Good will hunting is for someone growing up in the Boston area. Im glad you gave it a mention.
Could you've picked a more Gen X list of movies, Kevin?!
Lol. I'm pretty predictable that way.

Right on. I’m happy to hear it! :)

Saw it in full for the first time in a film class at age 19. I was the only dude in the room laughing out loud.

Yeah, wonder how that transition went. Heh.
We also watched 'Casablanca' 'Citizen Kane' and my prof's favorite 'A Room With A View'. Yawn.
I used to tell people that Bruce Willis' character in the Die Hard movies was Slim Pickens' nephew from Strangelove.
lol. Awesome.
Hahahahahahaha! Love it.
Dark and droll. Must be a Gen Xer! 😄 Great list.
Lol. Indeed & thank you!

Some classics in there! Great list Kevin. Platoon was incredible and around that time every war film seemed to be about Vietnam.
Thank you!! It sure felt that way, didn’t it?
Man oh man these are some great picks. "To Live and Die in L.A." is the best cop movie most people have never seen.
This might be the best description of the movie I’ve seen.
That is fun; and inspires me to make my own list.
Please do!
Yes! I would love to give you a spot for that to land. ;)

Put it all in a word doc and email it over to phonophore@gmail.com.
Will do. Either end of day today or sometime tomorrow. Thanks!
Nice list! I have 2 of these in my personal top five, I think: Raiders and Lebowski. My top five changes every couple of years, though, so watch out.
Solid picks! Love The Big Lebowski!
Also superb format, I think I'm gonna do a post in Hello Universe about films soon. 😀
Sweet! I hope you do; I'd love to read it.
To Live and Die in LA! I LOVE THAT MOVIE! Why has no one done a 4K restoration with bonus materials?
I'm happy to hear it! As for why no one has restored it? Good question!
I love To Live and Die in LA. Fascinating back story on how it was made. An Ultra HD Blu-Ray came out last July that looks fantastic.
Wait, what?!
He was asking for a 4K transfer of To Live & Die in LA just yesterday.
That was directed at Glenn. I had no idea there’d been any sort of update(s). That was a happy surprise.
Someone alert @Sherman Alexei

Thanks Keith! Lebowski seems to get better every time I watch it.
All good films, especially To Live And Die In LA.
Reading the comments, I've been happily surprised to see I'm not the only one that likes it.
It has gotten a lot of love. I might need to go back it and watch it again. I remember it as 'fine'. Need to revisit, I guess.
Great soundtrack, too.
Great list! Some genuine surprises here. Really cool story about your stepdad. Rock on! 🤘🏻
Thanks man! I'm glad you liked it!
