Here in Michigan, we get some of my favorite weather of the year in May. The nights are still cool and often rainy. The days can reach temps that feel like mid-summer. Each evening, as the sun fades the night returns with the pang of a chill.

The heart of spring in the midwest means open windows and fresh air. The first few days warm enough to air out the house after a long and confined winter can feel like the first blush of freedom. As the plants and trees spring to life they fill the air with oxygen, while the regular spring rain elicits volatile organic compounds like geosmin that provide the air with the ever present earthy scent that we so closely associate with the spring.
