WAIM Radio #081: Father's Day Radio
This week it's a full hour of songs dedicated to Dad. What is your favorite tune on fatherhood?
Our oldest daughter, Madeline Grace, was born at 11:05 am on August 25, 1998. That single moment marked the biggest change of my entire life. What had been a concept and vague idea for 38 weeks was now a living, breathing human person. I wept with my whole body as the nurse handed her to my wife, Kimmy. Drying tears from my cheeks, I leaned over to gently Madeline’s forehead, and whispered, “Hello. It’s so wonderful to meet you. I love you so much.”
Two years and a few months after Madeline was born, we welcomed her sister Hannah Olivia into the world. These two people have shaped me more into the person I am today than any other single thing that will happen in the entirety of existence on this planet. Being a father has made me strive to be kinder, more patient, more generous of spirit, and more curious about the world.
Fatherhood has also given me two of my very best friends. I am rarely as happy in this life as when I am laughing with my girls, and we laugh every time we get together. They are hilarious and smart young women. From dead perfect accents to poorly done impressions, Maddie and Hannah are a constant hoot.
The girls have adopted our family’s love of travel and adventure and curiosity. Only just in their mid-20’s they have already traveled to at least a half dozen countries, a wide swath of the United States, and spent several weeks in varying sections of Mexico. They have also latched onto the political fervor of their parents. I am thrilled to watch my daughters become empathetic, engaged young women fighting for a better world. I can only hope that I live a worthy example for them to follow.
In short, being a father has changed my life in immeasurable ways. It’s the most difficult, beautiful, and important work that I’ll ever be a part of. The journey thus far has been challenging, inspirational, difficult, magical, irritating, and amazing. I simply cannot imagine my life without these two amazing people at the center of it. I am so very grateful to be their Dad.
