What's Your Favorite Tune About The Mountains?
This week at WAIM Radio, we are taking a trip over the mountains. As we get ready to ascend to great heights and hit the thinning air, what songs are on your alpine playlist?
Last fall on my western tour, I played a show in the mountain town of Crested Butte South, Colorado. It’s a small, but quickly developing town that sits high in the Rocky Mountains, somewhere close to 9,000 feet above sea level.
After my show at the charming Zone West Brewing Company, I followed my hosts, Bill and Anne Sage back to their gorgeous log cabin home in the mountains and to their adorable dog, Little Traverse. The Sages are both Michigan natives. So, we spent most of our evening talking about our sacred Great Lakes, the color that I was missing back home, and Bill and Anne’s love for the mountains.
The following morning, I was ready to hit the road for Denver just as the sun was making its way up the ladder to the horizon. Bill and Anne suggested that I take the scenic route over the Cottonwood Pass. It would give me a gorgeous drive both up and down the mountain. They also assured me that the view from the pass was worth the trip alone.
I wound my way slowly up the mountain following Cottonwood Creek up the hill as the water in the creek ran downward. The vista at the summit was as gorgeous as delivered. I stood in the cold, morning sunshine to take in the surrounding mountains, adjacent lake, and ice capped peaks. I felt goosebumps rise as I stood in the crisp, quiet sunshine.
Where I grew up in Michigan it is almost painfully flat. Farther north in the state and up into the Upper Peninsula one will find smaller mountains akin to the Adirondacks, but there was absolutely nothing in my midwest upbringing to prepare me for a drive over the Rockies to begin the day. It was nothing shy of awe-inspiring. Here is just a glimpse of my morning on the mountain that day.

This week at WAIM Radio, we’re taking a 60 minute road trip to the mountains. We’ll climb the peaks, take in the views, and follow the rivers back down the slopes. We’re putting together a full hour of mountain tunes. Which songs about the jagged peaks, and rolling hills are your faves, and why? Tell us all about it.
Be sure to tune in Friday live at Noon Eastern on Suburbs Radio to hear the show live as it airs. New episodes are also archived here at WAIM each Tuesday. Feel free to go back and listen to any of our episodes at any time in the WAIM Radio archive.
Cheers,
