WAIM Radio #052: One Hour Before The Mast
This week on WAIM Radio we are taking to the seven seas. What's your favorite song about the ocean?
I’ve always been fascinated, and a bit terrified with the idea of naval exploration. It’s hard not to succumb to the romance of setting off to some uncharted land to find natural beauty, or civilizations never before seen by white men. And while there is an inherent excitement and allure to the adventure of the journey, these voyages are almost always fraught with danger and loaded down with the ignorant hubris of entitled white dudes.
These ocean bound exploits do make for riveting tales, though. Whether in the form of Moby Dick, a folk song or a first person account like Richard Henry Dana, Jrs’. Two Years Before The Mast, the seas have always held our imaginations and they’ve helped us to spin some of our most compelling yarns.
This week on WAIM Radio, we are focusing on the musical exploits of the seven seas, the four oceans and the world’s various waterways. During this hour aboard the USS What Am I Making, you’ll hear flourishes of orchestral goth, indigenous folk rock, dramatic synth pop, tender stories of emigration and the harrowing tale of a Great Lakes shipwreck.
Do you have a favorite tune about the tides? Tell us all about your favorite seafaring songs.

I'm taking two of your picks because they're songs I love.
Sloop John B - The Beach Boys
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot. I know, I know. It took place on Lake Superior and not the ocean. But Lake Superior is fucking huge, it might as well be an ocean.
Corpus Christi Bay - Robert Earl Keen
Ship of Fools is a great shout!
