WAIM #120 - Get To Work!
This week at WAIM Radio, we are getting down to the business of work. It's a full sixty minutes of songs about life on the job. What is your favorite working song?
I work incredibly hard. Between my duties here at WAIM and my time driving for Lyft andUber, I spend 70 or 80 hours a week at work. The days begin very early, usually by 5:00 am. It is customary for me to spend an hour or two writing in the Sheddio during those wee hours, before heading out to drive the mean streets of Lansing.
I awake each morning with a burning desire to get to my creative work. There is no sense of drudgery in heading out to the Sheddio for a full day of work. While the days are full, and often brutally long, I feel a deep sense of purpose and pride in my work here at WAIM. The biggest problem with this work is that it doesn’t pay me enough to have just one job.
So, I work. I tour across the country. I drive. I write. I podcast. And so it goes.
This is not the exception for creatives, it is the rule. As much as fans love to watch their favorite musicians, actors, and writers receive windfalls of cash, and showers of plaudits for their work, the truth is that the vast majority of folks making the music, art and film of today are just regular working stiffs like you and me.
Great creativity requires great effort. As much as greatness takes talent and expertise, even more importantly it takes time, dedication, and hard work. Even the most supremely talented artist or athlete will flounder if they fail to work at honing their skills. I know that I possess some innate gifts that make me suited for this work, but I didn't begin to do this work well until later I had done it for months, or even years.
The daily practice of publishing a podcast, an essay, or a radio show each day has helped to bring purpose and clarity to my work. I have never worried more about money as an adult than I do right now. Yet, I have never felt more certain of the work that I am doing. I am working this hard to build something more valuable than money.
