WAIM #014 - Cover Me [Replay]
An hour of cover versions, translations, and interpretations.
WAIM Radio is up and running now as a part of the Rockin’ Suburbs Radio Network. Every Friday at noon eastern, you’ll get a new one hour show based around a unified theme.
It’s hard to pin down what makes a great cover song. There are some basic rules to follow that seem to hold true at most times, but the itinerate parts of a memorable cover version can vary wildly.
One way to make your mark with a cover version is to radically reinvent the song. This might come from a change in gender perspective or racial outlook of the performer. Or it could simply be a complete sonic reworking that places the original tune in a brand new context. On rare occasions, the cover version may become the definitive recording of the song. Our opening track is proof of that realty.Whatever your criteria for a great cover version, what follows is an hour of my favorites and some of the genuine highlights of the art form. We get a double dip of songs written by Prince and translated by a pair of powerful women. We’re also treated to a trio of interconnected tracks that once more show off the genius and talent that has been found within the borders of the great state of Michigan.
From complete reworking to fitting homages, this hour of covers is sure to tickle your aural fancy and have you thinking about all the covers that I could have chosen. as I mention in the show, this theme is so rife, it will likely require more than one show. For now, here is at least an hour of great cover songs to brighten you day.
Did I miss your favorite? Do you have an idea for a future show? Tell us about it.
Cheers,
Matty C
Hi Matty - I am working on a new post all about great cover albums and I'm going to mention your covers radio show with a link. Wanted to give you a heads up. But also to let you know that when I click on the button "Listen to Cover Me Now" it takes me to the Canada show, not the covers show. I'm having trouble finding the link to that show, so I'm going to simply link the replay post on your Substack.
