Tour Recap - Columbus, MS
On my first trip to Mississippi I followed the Freedom Trail, paid tribute to a trio of fallen members of the fight for liberty, and I was treated to some genuine southern charm.
The sun was already warm as it shone its first flecks of light into southern Mississippi. The day looked to be a scorcher. I made some hotel room coffee and settled in for a couple early morning hours of work on the blog. After finishing a post and cleaning up some email, I packed up my remaining gear and hit the road northward towards the small town of Columbus, MS.
For my first stop, I wanted to take something of a pilgrimage. This was my first trip to Mississippi. Long before my visit, I was aware of the culinary, literary, and cultural history of the place. It was the home of William Faulkner, the birthplace of Tennessee Williams and it is the beating heart of the Delta Blues. It has also seen a terrible history of racial violence and upheaval.
