Tour Diary: Rockford, IL & Chicago, IL
As I crawled ever closer to home, I made a pair of stops in Illinois. I nearly suffered yet another cancelled gig in Rockford. Chicago wound up being a quiet night in with friends.
Friday morning came gently in Ames, IA. I arose just before 8:00 am to find Bryon putting the finishing touches on a pot of coffee. We chatted in the living room for a while over java before I got myself ready for the day, and prepped my bags. I loaded Aretha, and thanked Bryon for his tremendous hospitality and kindness. I asked him to give my hearty thanks and very best wishes to Rachel as well, who had already begun working for the day. I steered us along Iowa State Highway 30, eastward ever closer to home.
The nearly five hour commute on a Friday morning and early afternoon was smooth and largely unremarkable. It is always a treat though to cross the massive Mississippi River. To simply drive over it, even in the early 21st century, conjures images of Huck Finn and long lost riverboat gamblers. I sailed into Rockford with a couple of hours to kill before I needed to load in at the venue.
