As a way to celebrate the fun we’re having with the Steven Spielberg Bracket Challenge, I decided to craft a quartet of the great director’s movie posters reimagined as Penguin Classics book covers.
I’ve always been an enormous fan of the simple, elegant design of the vintage Penguin Classics book series. The bold use of the Gill Sans typeface in all caps matched with striking, single color blocks - most often the legendary Penguin orange - along with playful line art images to convey major themes and iconography of the texts.
For this series, the Spielberg Classics, I chose four of the legendary director’s most famous and iconic works. Just this quartet of pictures gives you an essence of the genius at work in Spielberg’s filmography, and we are barely scratching the surface of the man’s output.
Here is an auteur who has not only made brilliant films that are adored by critics and stand the test of time, they are also some of the most popular films in cinema history.
Steven Spielberg is basically the moviemaking version of The Beatles; brilliant, ahead of his time, and wildly popular.
I hope you enjoy these renditions. You can see full, high quality images of each cover below. I’d love to hear what you think of these designs. Do you have thoughts on Penguin Classics or Spielberg? I’d love to hear those as well. Please, join the discussion.
Cheers,
Matty C
